5BB (KOBER 5BB, 5BB TELEKI)
Origin
This variety results from the cross between Vitis berlandieri and Vitis riparia from Euryale Rességuier plant material.
Breeder and year of release
Sigmund Teleki and Franz Kober, 1896.
Resistance to soil pests
5 BB is highly tolerant to root phylloxera and most nematodes such as Meloidogyne incognita and Meloidogyne hapla.
Adaptation to the environment
5 BB is a very versatile rootstock, which stands out for its great capacity to adapt to a wide variety of soils and growing conditions.
It presents good tolerance to calcareous soils, withstanding up to 35% total lime, 20% active lime, and a Chlorosis Power Index (CPI) of 40. This characteristic provides it with good resistance to iron chlorosis.
It also shows good adaptation to moist and sandy soils, which expands its possibilities for use in different types of terrain.
5 BB is characterized by its high vigor, which favors potent vegetative development and vine growth, especially interesting in plantations where the goal is to enhance the vigor of the grafted variety.
Interaction with the grape variety and production objectives
5 BB is characterized by transmitting high vigor to the grafted variety, favoring potent vegetative development and good vine formation during the first years of planting.
This rootstock is especially interesting in soils of limited fertility and for varieties of moderate vigor, where it contributes to enhancing the growth and development of the vineyard.
Thanks to its ability to stimulate vegetative vigor, 5 BB is a suitable option for plantations seeking vigorous development, provided that a good balance between vegetative growth and grape production is maintained.
