Cabernet Franc

Black grape variety

Origin

In all likelihood, Cabernet Franc originated in southwestern France.

Synonyms

There are no officially recognized synonyms in France or other European Union countries.

Phenology

  • Budbreak period: 5 days after the Chasselas variety.
  • Ripening period: Second period, 2.5 to 3 weeks after the Chasselas variety.

Technological potential

The clusters are medium-sized, and the berries are small. This variety allows for the production of quality aromatic wines with a medium aging potential. However, the potential for sugar, acidity, and polyphenols (color intensity and tannic structure) is moderate.

Agronomic characteristics

  • This variety, which has considerable vigor, should be managed with moderate long pruning or, potentially, short pruning in more favorable climatic zones.
  • Regarding soil, the best results are usually obtained in clay-limestone soils, but it can also yield optimal results in sandy soils, provided there is no water stress.
