Origin
This variety originates from the Loire Valley and, most likely, Anjou.
Synonyms
In Bulgaria, Chenin is officially called "Shanin".
Phenology
- Budburst period: 1 day before the Chasselas variety.
- Ripening period: 2nd period, 3 to 3.5 weeks after the Chasselas variety.
Technological potential
The clusters are medium to large and the berries are medium to small. Depending on the growing conditions and the terroirs (limestone, schist), this variety can produce sparkling or dry wines as well as sweet wines. The acidity potential is significant, and the resulting products are elegant, generally quite lively, crisp, and with honey aromas.
Agronomic characteristics
- Chenin is a vigorous and fertile variety with a production potential that depends heavily on the agronomic fertility of the soils where it is grown.
- It is sensitive to sunburn.
- Budburst is early and, following a spring frost, the secondary shoots show very little fertility.
