Origin
This variety was obtained by Louis and Henri Bouschet in 1855, in Mauguio (Hérault), through the crossing of Grenache and Petit Bouschet (Aramon × Teinturier du Cher).
Synonyms
In France, this variety may officially be called «Alicante Bouschet» for propagation plant material. In Spain, Alicante Henri Bouschet may officially be called «Garnacha Tintorera».
Phenology
- Budburst period: 4 days after the Chasselas variety.
- Ripening period: second period, 2.5 to 3 weeks after the Chasselas variety.
Technological potential
The clusters are medium to large in size, and the berries are medium-sized. This teinturier variety is primarily used for its color contribution. The wines obtained are quite full-bodied, often flat, and lack finesse and elegance.
Agronomic characteristics
This variety is quite vigorous, but it must be pruned short, as it tends to dry out on some occasions. Likewise, it is quite sensitive to wind.
