Synonyms
In the European Union, Gewürztraminer is officially known by other names: Dišeči traminec (Slovenia), Roter Traminer (Germany), Traminer (Austria), Tramin červený (Czech Republic, Slovakia), Traminer aromatico (Italy), Traminac (Croatia), and Traminer roz (Romania).
Phenology
- Budburst period: similar to the Chasselas variety.
- Ripening period: Period 1, 1 and a half weeks after the Chasselas variety.
Technological potential
The clusters and berries are small in size. Gewürztraminer has good sugar accumulation potential and, in favorable soils, produces high-quality wines that are moderately acidic, robust, generous, with very potent and particular aromas (rose, lychee). These aromas tend to become heavier and less elegant in warm climates.
Agronomic characteristics
- This variety, of high vigor, low yielding, and susceptible to
coulure, requires long pruning. - Quite demanding regarding soil (preferably loamy), Gewürztraminer is susceptible to chlorosis.
- It is also susceptible to rachis drying.
- This relatively early variety sometimes fears spring frosts but tolerates winter frosts well.
