Macabeu

White grape variety

Origin

This variety originates from Spain, probably from Catalonia. According to published genetic analyses, Macabeu is the result of a cross between Gibi and Brustiano faux.

Synonyms

Viura.

Phenology

  • Budburst period: medium.
  • Ripening period: medium.

Technological potential

The clusters are very large and the berries are spherical, medium to large in size, with very thin skin. Depending on the growing conditions, Macabeu can produce dry white wines, sparkling wines, or even natural sweet wines. Dry white and sparkling wines are light and pleasant, but often lack acidity and finesse. The aromas (with occasional notes of fennel) are also of low intensity.

Agronomic characteristics

  • A productive variety with an upright growth habit and shoots that break easily in windy conditions. Fertility ranges from good to medium.
  • Cool, damp soils should be avoided, as well as very dry soils, where it exhibits early leaf fall.
  • Highly susceptible to mites and powdery mildew. Very susceptible to grey rot.
  • Requires good trellising and short pruning due to its high productivity.
