Origin
This variety was developed by INRA in 1961 and is the result of a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.
Synonyms
There are no officially recognized synonyms in France or other European Union countries.
Phenology
- Budbreak period: 5 days after the Chasselas variety.
- Ripening period: 3rd period, 4 weeks after the Chasselas variety.
Technological potential
The clusters are large, while the berries are very small and covered with a significant amount of bloom. For this reason, the must yield is limited (approximately 160 kg/hL). Marselan allows for the production of wines with good color, optimal typicity, and high quality. They are aromatic, robust, and possess a very interesting structure (soft tannins without bitterness), making them suitable for aging.
Agronomic characteristics
- Marselan is a highly fertile variety that can be managed with short pruning (on cordons).
- Its management should preferably be done with a trellis, as it generates quite long shoots.
- It is preferable not to plant it in overly shallow soils. Avoid grafting it onto 140 Ru rootstock.
