Phenology
- It is an early budding and late ripening variety, typically between late September and early October.
- This cycle necessitates sufficient time for proper ripening and makes it susceptible to spring frosts.
Technological potential
Trepat yields wines with rather low to medium-low color intensity, good acidity, low alcohol content, and a very fresh and fruity profile. Traditionally, it has been primarily used for rosés and rosé cavas, but there are increasingly more light and elegant red wines with good varietal identity. It presents aromas of red fruit, soft spices, wild herbs, and sometimes mineral or slightly reductive notes. On the palate, it is usually a light, fresh, delicate wine with moderate tannins.
Agronomic characteristics
- It is a vigorous variety with an upright growth habit and large, compact clusters of big, round berries.
- It has a medium-high yield and performs well with short pruning, although it can produce many suckers from old wood, requiring green pruning.
- It is susceptible to spring frosts and excoriose, but shows good resistance to botrytis.
- It fears drought and prefers cool soils with some humidity and good water retention capacity.
- Overall, it is a very interesting variety for areas seeking freshness, typicity, and a less alcoholic wine style.
